Gran Turismo 5 is to be the fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo racing video game series. It is currently under development by Polyphony Digital and is to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. It expands on the Prologue version and will be the first of the main numbered series to feature on the PlayStation 3.

For the first time in the main series, an online mode will be available in the game, with 16 player capability. GT5 will be the first game in the franchise's history to include visual damage modelling. Dynamic weather changes and night racing have also been hinted at, but have yet to be officially confirmed. WRC and NASCAR will also be featured for the first time in the Gran Turismo franchise.

Features
  • Gran Turismo 5 is set to feature over 950 cars and 20 locations, with tracks and variations bringing the number to 70. The Top Gear Test Track, Dunsfold Park located in the UK, popularized by the British automotive television show Top Gear will be included in the game.
  • The playable demo of Gran Turismo 5 at Gamescom '09 featured the Tokyo Route 246 track, seen in previous incarnations of the game. It has been rumored that not all cars (only 170 of the 1,000 vehicles) will implement damage and it is likely that only race specification cars will feature damage, as opposed to normal road-going vehicles. According to Kazunori Yamauchi, this aspect of the game is not yet finalized.
  • Lamborghini and Bugatti will likely make their first appearance in the game, following on from their introduction in Gran Turismo PSP, and it has been confirmed the new "gullwing" Mercedes-AMG SLS will appear. German car manufacterer Porsche is not likely to be in the game. In an article briefly posted on Polyphony Digital's website, the introduction of electric cars was confirmed; this includes the latest Tesla Motors vehicle. Hybrids were previously included in Gran Turismo 4 with the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight.
  • Yamauchi said in an interview with Edge Magazine that Gran Turismo 5 could have some compatibility with the PSP version. He said, in an interview with G4, that "we’re going to make it so that you can actually export the cars for the PSP version into Gran Turismo 5, so you can export your garage."
  • The game is also said to feature head tracking using the PlayStation Eye allowing the player to move their head around the 3D cockpit instead of using buttons.
